FYI's 4P's Pedagogy Trainings

For Youth Inquiry (FYI) designs participatory theatre experiences to activate the creative potential of school, family, and healthcare systems and improve the wellbeing of youth. As ICAH's resident performance company, our youth education programming - which includes participatory plays, residencies, and peer education offerings - reaches thousands of young people each year. In addition to touring our plays to schools and communities, we also produce performances for the public. You may have seen FIRST, EXPECTATION, or GRAY AREA in Spring 2017.

Now more than ever, ICAH knows that cultural problems demand cultural solutions. If you believe that our creative imaginations can help dismantle oppressive systems and behaviors, JOIN US for our first-ever "4 P's" Pedagogy Training Series!

Perfect to ignite the practice of:

Teaching Artists, Devised Theatre Artists, Directors, Youth Workers, Actors invested in Ensemble Work, Organizers, Theatre of the Oppressed Practitioners, and anyone else interested in getting involved in FYI's work!

FYI's "4 P's" Framework

The 4 P's serve as the foundational values of our youth programming and original, devised work.

  • PLEASURE (1/15): We need to cultivate intentional lightness to stay in hard conversations for longer periods of time.
  • PERSPECTIVE (1/22): Stories help us understand ideas and expand our own worldviews through others' experiences.
  • POWER (1/29): We interrupt "traditional" educator/learner and director/actor relationships alike by striving for equity, curiosity and shared power.
  • PRACTICE (2/5)Knowledge is meaningless if we don’t know how to use and apply it in our lives.

Each 4 P's Pedagogy Training session will dive into the idea and application of one of the above concepts, allowing plenty of time for participation-based activities, collaborative making, and the opportunity to envision how our framework applies to your own contexts. All trainings are facilitated by FYI company members (professional teaching artists, directors, facilitators, actors, and organizers).

Displaying christabel.JPGStories help us understand ideas. Exploring diverse perspectives through performance helps us empathize and connect to each other. Participatory theatre, as a form, offers low-risk ways for audiences to share their own experiences and opinions through the safety of character, scenario, and imagination.

In this training, dive into the idea and application of the concept of "Perspective" in artmaking, curriculum design, and community building process. In each session, we allow plenty of time for participation-based activities, collaborative making, and the opportunity to envision how our framework applies to your own contexts.

Facilitated by FYI Company Members Rashaad Hall and Clair Fuller.

Displaying sexedexp.pngParticipatory theatre interrupts "traditional" educator/learner and director/actor relationships alike by striving for equity, curiosity and shared power. We acknowledge and explore our own intersectional identities and experiences affect how we show up in a room. We also challenge systems of oppression by maintaining that facilitators (often, adults) do not know all of the answers; all of us are constantly learning. Our plays, workshops, and rehearsal rooms are designed to facilitate an intentional and equal exchange of ideas.

In this training, dive into the idea and application of the concept of "Power" in artmaking, curriculum design, and community building process. In each session, we allow plenty of time for participation-based activities, collaborative making, and the opportunity to envision how our framework applies to your own contexts.

Facilitated by FYI Company Members Dionne Addai, Adia Alli and Vince Pagán.

    FYI's 4 P's Pedagogy Training: Practice

Displaying condom.pngKnowledge is meaningless if we don’t know how to use and apply it in our lives. Participatory theatre techniques support audiences and makers alike as we practice for real life, free from fear of failure. In this way, our participatory model helps audiences prepare for future situations and conversations, putting newfound knowledge to work.

In this training, dive into the idea and application of the concept of "Practice" in artmaking, curriculum design, and community building process. In each session, we allow plenty of time for participation-based activities, collaborative making, and the opportunity to envision how our framework applies to your own contexts.
